Painting the Peaceable Kingdom
Inspired by Edward Hicks’ Peaceable Kingdom from The Met Open Access collection, I imagined what this strange, dreamlike gathering might have looked like if the artist had painted it from life.
I reconstructed the scene as a cinematic living tableau: the girls, lion, leopard, cattle, sheep and other animals become real models posing together in an autumn landscape, while a painter observes them and translates this impossible gathering back onto canvas.
The film moves from the original museum artwork into a living world, then reveals the artist painting that world before returning to the historical image.
