In 2005, Alexis Ohanian doodled a simple alien character that would become one of the most recognisable mascots on the internet. While a student at the University of Virginia, Ohanian sketched the figure, eventually named Snoo, during a marketing class. He later digitised the drawing using a trial version of PaintShop Pro. Designed to be a genderless, time-travelling visitor, Snoo featured a round head, a single antenna, and glowing red eyes. This minimalist aesthetic reflected the site’s early focus on community-driven content. Ohanian’s creation gave Reddit a friendly, approachable face, helping the platform establish a distinct identity during its formative years.
