Dante Moretti is professional football's golden striker, ruthless on the field, and off it, trailed by whispers of fights that disappear from the news and men who suddenly back down around him. Serena Vale is his complete opposite: a shy university art student working quietly in the stadium's museum archive to pay her tuition. Their lives collide when Serena accidentally witnesses a violent confrontation involving Dante and men from his past. Rather than let her walk away exposed, Dante becomes obsessed with keeping her safe, inserting himself into every corner of her life with the frightening certainty of a man who has spent years controlling every threat around him. Serena is terrified of him at first, until she discovers beneath the darkness a man who treats her innocence as something precious, not weak. As they grow closer, Serena learns Dante's obsession is rooted in guilt: everyone he's ever loved has been hurt because of him. When Serena is targeted to force Dante into throwing the championship final, the dark hero everyone fears is unleashed completely, and the league learns exactly what "touch her and you die" really means.
