Most designers treat healthcare and fintech like any other SaaS project. That's where things break. I've designed telemedicine platforms, neo-banking apps, and enterprise compliance dashboards. The biggest lesson: in regulated industries, the UX constraints aren't optional. They're the product. In healthcare, you can't just make the UI "clean and minimal." You need to account for HIPAA compliance in every flow. A patient connecting with a specialist in under 3 minutes sounds like a UX goal, but it's also a clinical requirement. The design has to serve both. In fintech, trust isn't built with a nice gradient. It's built with transparency. When someone is moving money between fiat and crypto, every confirmation screen, every status indicator, every error state matters more than the landing page. Three things I've learned designing in regulated spaces: Compliance isn't a constraint, it's a design brief. The regulations tell you exactly what the user needs to see, when, and how. That's more direction than most product briefs give you. Edge cases are the product. In a social app, an edge case is annoying. In a healthcare app, an edge case is a patient not reaching their doctor. Design for the 5%, not just the happy path. Developer handoff has zero margin for ambiguity. When a missed state can trigger a compliance violation, your Figma files need to be airtight. Every screen, every error, every loading state documented. If you're hiring a designer for a regulated product, ask them about the last time they designed an error state. If they can't answer in detail, they've only designed the happy path.
