I built a Figma plugin that lets designers search and import over 2.5M public domain images from a curated list of museums and cultural institutions like The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY Public Library, Smithsonian, and more...
It’s called OPENMUSE. A digital muse for your work.
In a moment where AI is becoming part of almost every creative workflow, access to great references matters more than ever. Before build, we still need to look. To study. To collect. To be inspired by the visual culture that came before us. The plugin is powered by Openverse[.]org, a project by WordPress[.]org, which gives access to openly licensed and public domain content from trusted cultural sources. The most interesting part for me was the process: 1️⃣ I used Figma’s new Design Agent to explore different directions for the plugin’s look and feel, then kept iterating on the UI, improving the flows and adding new screens. 2️⃣ I used Figma MCP with Claude Code to build the plugin from scratch and translate the Figma designs into a working product as closely as possible. 3️⃣ I also used Figma Make to prototype some UI animations and create the landing page for the plugin. The whole thing took less than 24 hours 🤯. In the video, I walk through the project, the design process, and the tools I used to build it.
