3D is not dying, and it's not becoming cheaper! 3D production is getting faster, and that's an undeniable fact. Please, under no circumstances confuse reducing production costs with lowering a 3D artists hourly rate!
For the artist, the cognitive workload and level of expertise required have either increased or, at the very least, remained the same. So why should artists be paid less for their work? A 3D video becomes cheaper because it takes less time to produce.
Previously, a video like this could take almost a week to create, plus client discussions. Now we can produce something similar in a single working day, excluding discussions. But if you want more iterations, more experimentation, and greater complexity throughout the process, the production cost will be the same as before. You simply have more options now, and those options come at a price.
The fact that AI is involved in the process should not reduce an artists hourly rate from $60 to $20. It simply takes less time to achieve the same result with AI. That's why a 3D video can now cost $2,000 instead of $5,000.
I'm simplifying my 3D rendering workflow with AI.
In this project, I got to do some proper 3D work while making the lighting and rendering stages much easier by running viewport animations through MiniMax H3 locally.
The result was a high level of control over the content, minimal iterations, and completely free render generation.
Here's the timeline and pipeline: 🔎Reference selection (20 minutes) 🧩Modeling and animation in Cinema 4D (2–3 hours) 🔮Shot pre-rendering in Octane (less than 1 hour) 🪄Pre-render enhancement in GPT (10 minutes) 🧙Processing shots and viewport renders through MiniMax H3 in ComfyUI (30–40 minutes) 💪Upscaling with Topaz (10 minutes)
Less than one working day for 15 seconds of commercial 3D video, with the ability to get full client approval on all movements and maintain complete control over visual consistency.

cheaper and faster are not the same thing, people mix those up constantly
