In the New York Public Library I found Anna Atkins's Photographs of British Algae (1843–53), the first book ever illustrated with photographs, made by laying seaweed directly on light-sensitive paper. I turned her cyanotypes into a Recraft Style and pointed it at the modern equivalent of the tide pool: the drawer every household has, full of tangled cables, orphaned earbuds and takeaway chopsticks. Photographs of Domestic Algae is the field guide to that drawer, each specimen pressed flat, printed in Prussian blue and labelled in Atkins's hand with its proper Latin name. A charging cable becomes Cabellus tortuosus, a shattered phone screen branches like kelp, and an e-scooter takes the place of her giant Laminaria. Same process, same page, one hundred and eighty years of junk.
