5 Years and $20K+ on Upwork: What Actually Wins Video Editing Clients
After 5+ years editing for clients in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, here's what I've learned works:
1. The first 3 seconds sell the video. Clients don't remember transitions. They remember retention. Every edit I make starts with the hook.
2. Sound design is half the edit. Muted, a great edit feels flat. Designed sound is what makes motion feel expensive.
3. Speed without quality loses clients. Quality without speed loses them faster. Clear timelines and fast revisions kept my repeat clients coming back.
4. Niche beats generalist. Documentary, SaaS motion and YouTube storytelling each have their own rules. Knowing those rules is what clients pay for.
5. Communication is a deliverable. Most clients don't leave because of the edit. They leave because they felt out of the loop.
Now I'm bringing this to Contra, focused on SaaS product animation, documentary-style YouTube and short-form content.
If you need a video that holds attention and looks premium, let's talk.
