Claude Code's real ceiling isn't a vague rate limit — it's the shared five-hour usage window that resets on a clock, not on your deadline.
I ship with Claude Code myself. Per Anthropic's own usage docs, paid plans get a session usage limit that resets every five hours (the period starts on your first message, then resets in full five hours later), plus weekly caps. Usage from claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop counts toward the SAME pool. A long agent loop that tools hard or keeps a fat conversation open can burn the whole coding day — even if you never open the chat UI.
What burns it faster: longer or more complex threads, tools and connectors, higher effort, and automatic context management on long chats. What stretches it: a fresh chat when context bloats, lower effort on routine steps, and checking Settings → Usage before another multi-hour loop.
When your coding-agent quota dies mid-task, what's your backup seat — another plan, another CLI, or wait?
