Shopify quietly turned on WebMCP for every Liquid storefront on August 5, no setup required.
What it does: AI agents a shopper brings into their browser tab can now search your catalog, manage the cart and walk through checkout on their behalf, right on your live storefront. Nothing to install, no theme change - it is already running on Liquid stores, Chromium browsers only for now while it stays an origin trial.
Why it matters: this is different from ChatGPT or Perplexity citing your product pages. This is an agent acting inside your storefront's own session, reading your actual inventory and pricing in real time. If a shopper's assistant checks stock or starts a cart on your site, it is calling tools your store already exposes.
Two things worth checking this week. First, open your product pages and confirm price, availability and variant data are accurate - an agent reads exactly what is there, no interpretation. Second, if you run apps that rewrite cart or checkout behavior, test the flow still works when it is not a human clicking through it.
Nothing to turn on, nothing to buy. Just worth knowing your storefront can now be operated by something other than a shopper's hands.
