Designing for a 6-year-old and their parent on the same screen kills most UX playbooks in the first five minutes.
That was the real problem behind FairShare a parenting app for screen-time and chore management, ages 4 to 10. Not "make it cute." Not "make it functional." Both, without either group feeling talked down to or shut out.
The two-phone setup was the hardest part. To block apps on a kid's device, parents had to configure their own phone and the child's phone in sync a process that breaks the moment anyone hesitates on a step. We split it into short, sequential instructions instead of a single settings dump, so a parent holding a toddler with one hand could still get through it without calling their tech-savvy friend.
Task status logic ran deeper than a normal to-do app, too: active, overdue, declined, upcoming, pending approval each one displayed differently depending on whether you're the parent assigning it or the kid receiving it. Same data, two different mental models to design around.
Color was doing strategic work, not decoration. Deep purple and pink not because it's "friendly," but because it had to read as legitimate to a parent and appealing to a kid who never chose this app in the first place.
