Before Contra, I built GitSpo — a platform that aggregated posts and comments across GitHub, npm, PyPI, and other developer platforms, notifying project contributors whenever their projects were mentioned.
As an open-source engineer myself, it was one of my favorite projects. Through it, I discovered that my libraries were being used by Fortune 500 companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Oracle, and IBM.
@Gajus Kuizinas great idea! Is the project still going?
@Matthew Haar Unfortunately not. It was always a lot of work to maintain it. Had to kill any other projects when starting Contra. But I still own the domain and might bring it back one day. I know that there is demand for it!
@Gajus Kuizinas yeah, I have a buddy who got a job because he tracked down a project that was using his open source package and helped them with integration issues. Think this may have saved him some sleuthing.
Fun story: the origin of this project actually started with a call from my mom.
She was on vacation somewhere in France, struggling to get her TV to work and clicking through all the settings. At some point, she stumbled onto a screen showing software licenses – every TV has one....
