Only 4.5% of US consumers pay for ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. The top 1% of those payers spend $903 a month.
That 1% outspends the bottom half of all payers combined. Here's what it means if you build or buy AI.
The numbers, from a16z's seventh Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps report (YipitData's US consumer card panel, August)😍
→ 4.5% of eligible consumers had an active paid subscription. A year ago: 2.1%.
→ The median payer spends $25 a month, and in a16z's words they "barely have expanded this spend over time."
→ The top 1% average $903 a month. That is 19.5% of all observed consumer AI spend, against 16.6% for the bottom 50%.
→ On the $100-a-month tiers: 7.3% of Claude's payers, 1.3% of Google's, 1.1% of ChatGPT's.
→ 29 of the top 50 vendors by spend appear on no web or mobile traffic list.
a16z's own caveat: panels, US only, consumer cards. "It should not be read as total company revenue."
That's the headline.
Here's what it hides.
Nearly half of US consumers use AI. About 1 in 22 pays. And the money comes from a sliver who pay like a business. $903 a month is a payroll line, not an app subscription.
I run a one-person company on AI agents.
My AI spend sits far above that $25 median, and it has grown every quarter, because every agent I add runs all day whether I'm at the desk or not.
What I guard against is paying $903 for $25 of use. So every agent has a written job, a cost cap, and a day each month when I ask whether it earned its line.
3 rules I take from this😍
1. Count the use, not the users.
"Half of consumers use AI" and "4.5% pay" are both true. Only one of them funds a company.
2. Build for the 1%, price for the median.
The $25 payer won't move. The $903 payer is spending on work. Find out which work.
3. Know which bill you are.
If your AI spend is going up, name what it replaced. If the answer is nothing, it's a hobby.
A report that counts who actually pays, not who visits, is good news. I mean that.
Almost nobody pays for AI.
The few who do, pay like a business.
Your own AI bill: under $25 or over $100 a month? One number.
