A lot of our work is dense product screens. Dashboards, data tables, the kind of thing where there is more information than anyone would like and you cannot just delete half of it.
Making that look good is the easy part, honestly. Spacing, type, restraint, there are known answers for most of it.
The harder thing is that the engineer who built the screen and the person using it every day are looking at the same thing and seeing two different things. The engineer sees fields. The user sees a decision they have to make in about four seconds.
So the real job is not arranging the information. It is deciding what someone is allowed to not look at, and then defending that when somebody asks why their number is not bigger.
That part never photographs well, which is why you rarely see it in portfolios. A screenshot of a good dense interface looks a lot like a screenshot of a bad one.
