three old ways of seeing iraq: stone, paint, light 🇮🇶
all three of my entries are in, and honestly i was cutting it close 😅 this took way longer than i thought, but i'm really proud of how it came out.
the idea: take three old archives that drew or photographed this part of the world, turn each one into a recraft style, and point it at iraq.
1. stone: layard's 1850s engravings of the nineveh palace reliefs, carving the baghdad i see every day. delivery bikes, the street generator, the jam on the bridge.
2. paint: al-wasiti painted the maqamat in baghdad in 1237. i gave his wanderer abu zayd a job, now he runs a delivery brand.
3. light: prokudin-gorsky took colour photos of the region around 1905 to 1915 but never came to iraq. so i made a style from his photos and took the pictures he never got to take. the old houses on the tigris, the marshes, the copper market. none of these are real photos. i wish they were.
a bit about me: i grew up in the uk, 13 years there, then came back to baghdad. i'm a web designer making english and arabic sites. iraq has so much history and a lot of people here forgot it, so this one meant a lot to me.
winning would honestly make a real difference for me right now, so fingers crossed 🤞 thank you recraft and contra for running this, and good luck everyone.
