For this challenge, I chose John White Alexander's Repose (1895, oil on canvas, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession 1980.224).
The painting shows a woman fully reclined on a chaise longue, her body completely at ease while her gaze stays alertly turned toward the viewer. A dark ribbon sash cuts across the cascading folds of her gown. Alexander was celebrated in both Paris and New York as "the painter of the flowing line," known for the sinuous grace and undulating rhythms of fabric in works like this one.
I kept every formal decision Alexander made — the pose, the ribbon, the gaze, the palette — and changed exactly one material: the gown is now built from pleated toilet tissue.
"Repose" is Alexander's original title. My version adds the accent — "Répose" — since that's also the brand printed on the rolls. The joke isn't the toilet paper; it's that the painting's own title was already, unknowingly, a perfect product name for something meant to make you relax.
I liked the idea of taking something totally ordinary and painting it like it's a masterpiece. The material itself came together early — the paper, the quilting, the ribbon all read correctly almost immediately. The real iteration was getting everything else to match: her exact pose and gaze took several passes, and even the rolls needed refining until a sheet visibly unspooled from one, rather than just sitting there as decoration.
