A customer just finished paying you. This is the moment they trust you the most, right after handing over their money and getting confirmation it worked.
Most Shopify stores show them a blank page that says "thank you for your order" and nothing else.
That's a wasted moment. Not because the customer needs anything else sold to them right there, but because this is the highest attention point in their entire visit. They're not distracted by browsing anymore. They're not comparing prices. They already decided to trust you. And most stores just let that attention disappear.
I looked through a batch of Shopify thank you pages recently. Almost all of them were the same default layout. Order number, a generic thank you line, nothing else.
Here's what that empty page is quietly missing:
→ No invitation to follow on social media while attention is at its highest → No mention of a referral or loyalty program, even for stores that already have one set up → No small upsell for something genuinely useful, like a related product at a modest discount → No clear next step, so the customer just closes the tab and moves on
None of this means turning it into another sales pitch. The tone still needs to feel like a thank you, not a second checkout attempt.
What actually works here, and takes under an hour to set up:
Add a short, genuine thank you message with your brand's actual voice, not the default Shopify text.
Include one small, relevant offer only if it makes sense, like a discount on a second item that pairs with what they bought.
Add a simple line inviting them to follow you, if that's something your audience actually does.
If you have a referral program, this is the best place to mention it, right when trust is highest, not three emails later.
A thank you page isn't the end of the interaction. It's the first page someone sees as an actual customer instead of a visitor. Most stores treat it like the finish line when it's really the start of the next relationship.
If your thank you page still shows the Shopify default, that's worth fixing before your next campaign, not after it.
What's the best thank you page you've personally seen after buying something? Curious what stood out to you.
