Stop adding llms.txt to your site, thinking it will rank you on Google AI Overviews.
It won’t. ❌
Every second LinkedIn post right now claims:
Just enable llms.txt in Yoast, and AI search engines will magically index your site!
Sounds easy, right? Except it’s a complete myth for Google.
📢 Google's Official Stance:
Official Google Search Guidance:
You don't need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in generative AI search.
John Mueller (Google Search Advocate):
Googlebot ignores llms.txt. Self-reported files can't help LLMs differentiate or rank one website over another; it's comparable to the old keywords meta tag.
Large scale studies and server logs confirm it: AI search engines aren't even requesting these .txt files for ranking citations.
So what is llms.txt actually for?
It was proposed as a lightweight standard for AI developer tools (like Cursor/Claude Code) and custom AI agents to read clean Markdown without HTML bloat. It was never designed for Google SEO or GEO.
What ACTUALLY gets you cited in Google AI Overviews?
• Rich Schema Markup (JSON-LD for entities)
• Answer-First Formatting (Clear H2s & direct answers)
• Clean, Fast-Loading HTML
• Brand Mentions & Entity Authority
Stop chasing shiny text files. Stick to solid technical fundamentals.
Quick question for SEOs and Agency owners:
Are you enabling llms.txt on client sites anyway, or sticking strictly to Schema & HTML?

Your competitors are already showing up in AI search. Are you?
We recently designed and developed a new website for AGMEX, a green mobility and energy exhibition in Ethiopia, using Wix Studio.
But what people don't see is how much work happens before a website goes live.
We spent weeks getting the SEO, content, and website structure right, making sure Google and AI search engines could understand the business from day one.
And now, just a few weeks after launch, we're already seeing the first results!
AI can find AGMEX, explain what the exhibition is about, and even guide people on how to book a space.
That's why I always say a website shouldn't just look good. It should actually bring opportunities to your business.
