Fireman's Coat (Hikeshi-banten), Japan, Edo period, 19th century.
A reversible quilted cotton coat worn by Edo firefighters. They wore it plain side out and soaked it in water before entering the fire. Once the blaze was out, they turned it inside out and walked home showing the elaborately dyed interior. The decoration was never the announcement. It was the reward for coming back.
The translation is not the imagery — it's the reversal. A contemporary technical shell built on the same rule: plain, unbranded and silent while you work. Turn it inside out and the whole story is there. Everything modern outerwear does backwards, where the logo shouts from the first metre.
