Merchants have started asking us whether they should block AI crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot from their Shopify store.
Checked robots.txt on three live stores this week to see what Shopify actually ships by default. None of them name any AI crawler specifically. There's a wildcard User-agent: * block and a separate one for adsbot-google, and that's it. Every AI crawler falls under that same wildcard, the same one Google and Bing fall under, which already allows product and collection pages and blocks cart, checkout and admin.
So by default your store isn't hiding from AI answer engines and it isn't specially exposed to them either, it's just treated like any other crawler. If you actually want to block a specific one, that's a manual line you add yourself, Shopify doesn't decide it for you.
Worth checking your own robots.txt before assuming either way.
