A Figma file full of components is not a design system.
A brand PDF is not a design system.

They look organized. They fail under pressure. The test is not how it looks in a case study. It is how it performs when sales needs a deck by morning.
Sales is not decoding typography.
Vendors are not studying philosophy.
Executives are not checking file formats before a fundraise.
One wrong export. Money lost.
Most systems centralize assets but do not remove friction.

Every year there's a new wave of "design trends" adaptive identity, modular components, flexible color palettes. And every year companies spend months making guidelines that look incredible as a Behance case study and then collect dust in a shared drive.
You know what actually works? a system your marketing team can use without calling a designer. Rules that are clear enough that someone on your growth team can build a landing page that still looks like your brand.
The identity work I'm proudest of isn't the stuff that gets the most likes. It's the stuff where a client's ops team is shipping brand-consistent assets six months later without asking me for help.
That's the job. Making it look good AND functional.

Last month I audited a legal SaaS homepage as part of a speculative pitch. Strong product - case management, client intake, SEO, staffing, web development, lead generation.
But a first-time visitor saw three product names with zero descriptions. Six services weren't on the page at all. Not buried - completely absent.
Every visitor who needed those services left without knowing they existed. That's a revenue problem, not a UX problem.
The fix was structural: Products with one-line value statements — Full services offering made scannable — Hero headline rewritten from feature to outcome language
Same product. Same pricing. Just visible.
