I found the “Chaudronnier” (coppersmith) plates in volume 3 of Diderot and d’Alembert’s Recueil de planches (Paris, 1763), in the Getty Research Institute’s public-domain scan on the Internet Archive. Their two-part layout is a workshop scene above and the tools laid out as numbered specimens below. It was the Encyclopédie’s way of making unseen craft legible, so I cropped away the lettering and built a Recraft V4 Style from three of these plates. With it I engraved an eight-plate 2026 supplement of métiers de l’invisible, the trades daily life depends on but nobody looks at: fibre splicing, data-centre cooling, solar, heat pumps, delivery, e-scooter repair, earbud repair and card terminals. Every plate number, figure number and title was set afterwards in real type (IM Fell), so the generator only draws and the typography stays honest.
