Your business might be tracking too many KPIs.
Revenue. Website traffic. Followers. Conversion rate. Average order value. Customer count. Gross margin. Churn. CAC. Inventory turnover.
The list keeps growing.
But more KPIs don't necessarily mean better decision-making.
Imagine a business reviews 30 metrics every month.
Everyone spends an hour discussing the numbers.
But at the end of the meeting, nobody can answer:
“So, what should we actually do differently?”
That's a problem.
A useful KPI should have a clear connection to a business decision.
For example:
Website traffic tells you how many people visited.
But if the question is:
“Is our marketing generating valuable customers?”
You may need to look at conversion, customer acquisition cost, and customer value together.
Similarly:
Revenue tells you how much you sold.
But if the question is:
“Are we growing efficiently?”
You may need revenue growth alongside margin, operating costs, and capacity.
The point isn't that one metric is better than another.
It's that context determines what matters.
Before adding another KPI to a dashboard, I think it's worth asking:
→ What decision does this metric support? → What action would change if the number moved? → Who actually needs to see it? → How frequently should it be reviewed? → Is it measuring an outcome, or just activity?
If nobody knows what to do with a metric, it may not belong on the dashboard.
A good dashboard shouldn't make a business feel more informed.
It should make the important questions easier to answer.
What’s one KPI you think businesses track simply because “everyone tracks it”?
