I love Figma. That's exactly why I stopped doing everything in it.
Figma is where I think. Years of muscle memory, tokens, variables, component APIs — it's home. Nobody is prying it out of my hands.
But over the past year, the further a project gets, the less of it happens on the canvas. Research moved into AI-assisted synthesis — patterns across reviews and threads, not sticky notes. Prototypes moved into code, because engineering stopped reacting to pictures of the thing and started reacting to the thing.
Figma didn't get smaller. The job got bigger.
My last project shipped with three kinds of deliverables: Figma files engineering could inherit, tokens they could implement directly, and documented decisions they could argue with. The screens were the smallest part.
If you're hiring designers: don't ask which tools they master — ask where their work ends. If you're a designer who loves your canvas: keep it. Just don't let it be the finish line.
