RIVE CHALLENGE SUBMISSION:
For my senior year animation project, I animated this 6.5 minute long short film called "REEL" entirely in Rive!
I'd never seen someone use Rive to make a whole film before, and I wanted an excuse to
A: really try pushing the visual aesthetic of the program beyond clean-cut looking UI, and
B: showcase some of the wacky tech I'd discovered while learning the program.
This film was created before the advent of data binding, so I had to use some clever tricks to get around it. All of the fish, bird, and bug procedural simulations you see in the film are created using this joystick feedback loop bug I discovered a while ago, which involves plugging a joystick back into itself.
Hope you enjoy! Music credits: Tsuki Kake by TOE, Photograph by Arcade Fire, and Alone in Kyoto by Air.
