Most of my best work was never commissioned.

It came from the hours no one was paying for - the late sessions where I stopped trying to be useful and started trying to be honest.

Design as a profession will sharpen your eye. But design as a practice, with no brief and no approval to chase, that's what keeps the eye alive.

Dropping some personal work here. Not a portfolio piece. Not optimized for anything.

Just a reminder to myself - and maybe to you - that the best thing we can do for our clients is never stop making things that aren't for them. :)

When does a project stop serving your portfolio? 👀

I’m currently working on a new website.

My work, knowledge, and vision have evolved a lot since I built the current one. Honestly, I think I disliked it about a month after launching… but it still did its job. It helped me share my work and build a business.

Now I’m moving into a more intentional direction, and I’m rethinking what actually deserves a place in my portfolio.

I know this isn’t always a clear or easy decision. So I’m sharing a few thoughts I’ve been using to evaluate my own work.

Would really love your perspective on this.

I feel this a lot. For me, a project stops serving the portfolio when it no longer reflects how I think — not just how it looks. Sometimes it can still be “good work,” but if it doesn’t represent your current depth or standards, it starts creating the wrong expectations.

This one started with a conversation about sound. About how certain periods just felt different. You can hear it instantly, not because it’s perfect, but because it has character. Today, you can make anything sound clean. But that doesn’t automatically give it feeling.

That’s the balance Next Movement is chasing.

A lot of their inspiration comes from specific moments in time: studios, gear, records that shaped how things used to sound.

To mirror that, I looked at design from those same eras. Not to copy it, but to understand its logic, the restraint, the structure, the intent behind it. From there, I combined it with a more contemporary approach. Something that feels precise and current, but still carries that sense of weight.

This is a short glimpse into that direction.
