Most demos of AI knowledge bases show you one PDF answering questions about itself. I used to think that was the hard part. It really isn't.
The real problem is that knowledge inside a company is never in one file. There's a policy in the onboarding manual, an exception to it deep in another document, and one person who happens to remember both exist. Ask a real question, and the answer is scattered across two or three places nobody thought to connect.
That's what I built PaperBase to fix. You hand it your whole set of documents, not one file, and ask it something that only makes sense if it reads more than one at a time. It finds the answer and shows you exactly which documents it came from, together.
I tested it against something with real density: a hundred-plus pages across three separate manuals, cross-referenced deliberately, the way real internal documentation actually is. A question that would take a person ten minutes of flipping between files got answered correctly, sources cited, in under ten seconds.
The speed isn't really the point. The point is that answering the question required holding two documents in mind at once, the same thing a person who actually knew the company would do. Most tools calling themselves knowledge bases don't do that. They're a chatbot bolted onto one file, and they work fine right up until you ask them something that spans two.
If the truth in your business lives in more than one document, this is built for exactly that gap.
