It was her expression that stopped me scrolling. Here is my first #FLORAMuseum contest entry. It imagines the world beyond a portrait photograph by Julia Margaret Cameron of Julia Jackson in 1867, from The Met’s online archive. Created in FLORA. More of the process below. It was her gaze (look at that expression) and the photograph’s timeless stillness which drew me in. I wanted to preserve those qualities while imagining what might be outside the frame, from the photographers point of view: an old wooden chair, a makeshift backdrop pinned to a line. And maybe we are outside in an unimaginable but totally plausible place, a winter field at golden hour. I used Nano Banana Pro in FLORA because it was the model I trusted to carry the portrait into a wider scene (and follow my instructions.) I was specific in my prompting to keep Julia in her sepia tones and a hand-painted photograph quality in the surrounding landscape. The softness and tones needed to belong with the portrait, not distract from our subject. I struggled to refine Julia’s position in the composition but finally got my desired result.
