Before I buy from any local business now, I do the same three things. Every time.
Most owners have no idea customers are doing this.
First, I Google the business name and check the reviews. Not just the star rating — I read the actual comments, especially the negative ones and how the owner responded to them.
Second, I check if the website looks current. A copyright date from 2019, or photos that look ten years old, makes me wonder if the business itself has moved on or is still around.
Third, I check how fast they reply. I send a message or fill out a contact form, and I time how long it takes to hear back. If it's more than a day, I've usually already bought from someone else.
None of this is about price. I haven't even gotten to price yet.
By the time I'm comparing prices, I've already decided who I trust. The business that responded fast and looked legitimate online usually wins, even if they're not the cheapest option.
Most business owners think customers pick based on price first. In my experience, trust gets decided before price is ever discussed.
If you're losing customers to a competitor who isn't even cheaper than you, this is probably why.
