The Newborn Stage

 

At birth, you do not simply become a parent. You become a nurse, a caregiver, a watchdog, and an entirely sacrificial lamb. Overnight, your identity is stripped down to the essentials of survival: keep this small, fragile human alive.

 

The days blur into nights and the nights into days. You learn to function on fragmented sleep, to hold your breath through hours of unexplained crying, to rock a body that refuses comfort while your own body aches with exhaustion. There is no clear reason for the tears, no manual that explains the pitch of this particular cry, and yet you stay. You stay when your arms tremble, when your eyes burn, when every logical part of you wants to hand the baby over and disappear for just one uninterrupted hour.

 

In this stage, love is not soft or poetic. It is physical. It is the willingness to be emptied, of sleep, of privacy, of the person you were before, so that another life can begin. You become less of yourself so that they can become more of themselves. And somewhere in the fog of those early weeks, the first quiet shift begins: the parent you thought you would be starts to dissolve, making room for the one this child actually needs.

Because even the smallest hands leave the biggest impacts, and those impacts begin long before the child can walk, speak, or understand what you’ve given up for them.
