Who’s next???
We would always use the standard pitch that consulting firms use to try to convince our clients that we could give them an advantage over their competitors and that we would give them an edge and help them win in their category.
However, every time after the end of a project we saw that those clients who really did break through and changed the terms of engagement were not the ones who managed to outplay some other company in their category. They were the ones who discovered such a unique and particular category for themselves that there was nobody else to compete with, since no one thought of this before or simply did not dare to.
We learned that being the best is a game without any end because someone is always spending more money, acting quicker and being a little bit sharper than you are. But there is no such a problem when it comes to being the only one. This means that you can be in a category that nobody knows or does not want to discover.
That is why we stopped asking our clients "How do we help you win the category" and asked them "What if you didn't have a category". This is how our strategic clarity became its own process and "the only, not the best" became our answer to that.
