Just finished building a new concept site for VALÉRIE as part of the Squarespace Make It Real Challenge!
The goal was to reflect the brand’s "Muted Earth & Shadows" vibe, focusing on cinematic visuals, clean layouts, and honest materials. I relied heavily on Finish Layer tools to bring it to life without code. Used Block Animations and Transforms to give the staggered galleries subtle scroll motion, and Stacks to keep the editorial typography and product grid perfectly aligned across all devices.

This project was built entirely in Squarespace with the goal of creating a premium website that feels clean, immersive, and memorable from the very first scroll.
I focused on strong typography, carefully curated imagery, thoughtful spacing, and subtle interactions to create an experience that feels polished while remaining intuitive to navigate.
Finish Layer helped bring the design to life through Block Animations for smooth reveals, Block Transforms to add depth and balance to the layouts, Stacks for responsive structure across screen sizes, and custom font uploads to give the brand a more distinctive identity.
Every design choice was made to enhance the experience rather than distract from it.
I've included screenshots of the homepage and key design decisions, along with a walkthrough showing the finished website, my design process, and the Squarespace editor where the site was built.

Brief project description:
After building websites for several boutique hotels over the last few years, it was time for one central hub. A single place for the six boutique hotels in The Hague (Netherlands) that Concierge Company manages.
Gijs Hoff came to me with a concept, illustrated through a couple of example websites, and the trust to bring my own creativity and expertise to it.
For me, it was important that the site felt calm, clear, and stylish, since the focus is on one thing: booking a hotel room that suits the website visitor best. And just as important: the client needs to be able to easily manage the site themselves. That's why I try to keep custom code to a minimum wherever I can.
The first version of the website went live at the end of January this year. More pages were added along the way, and the site has kept evolving since.
The website was built in Squarespace, with a connection to the Mews booking system so website visitors can book their favorite boutique hotel directly.
Explanation of how Finish Layer tools were used:
Block Animations & Transforms
I added hover animations to several buttons, where they scale up slightly on hover. I also applied animations to a number of text blocks: the heading text slowly moves from left to right, while the body text underneath moves from right to left, creating a subtle sense of depth and movement without distracting from the content.
Font Uploads
I chose not to upload a custom font for this project. Instead, I used Helvetica Neue, which is built into Squarespace. Since this is a collective website bringing together hotels that each already have their own distinct branding and fonts, I wanted the overarching site to feel timeless and neutral rather than compete with any individual hotel's identity.
Stacks
I used Stacks throughout the website, for example in the footer, to create fixed spacing between elements like the logo, tagline, and button. This holds up well across different browser and screen sizes, keeping the layout consistent.

We designed and built the site in Squarespace to deliver a premium, considered experience from the first scroll, matching the quality of the property itself.
We used the full Finish Layer suite to create a beautiful, smooth bespoke feel.
Block Animations - Cards slide into view as you enter the page, and reveal their copy on hover with a click-through link, creating an interactive, editorial feel.
Block Transforms - Used to build an overlapping card layout, giving the page depth and a dynamic, asymmetrical rhythm.
Stacks - Grouped and aligned blocks to control how the layouts hold together across screen sizes.
Font Uploads - A custom brand font uploaded to carry The Gate's personality throughout.
