I use AI on every project. I still don't trust it. Neither should you.
Here's the thing nobody's saying out loud. Fast Company and AIGA just ran a survey of freelance designers: 62% use AI often or sometimes, mostly for brainstorming and copywriting. Same survey, same designers: 70% believe it's making creative work worse. š
We're not confused. We're right on both counts.
AI is a tool. It's not a designer.
It doesn't know why the client hates blue. It doesn't know the CEO's ego is the real brief. It doesn't know that "just make it pop" actually means "I'm scared and need reassurance."
That's the job. That's what they're paying for.
The freelancers who win the next few years won't be the ones avoiding AI and they won't be the ones handing it their taste. They'll be the ones using it as a faster pencil, while getting more opinionated, not less.

Most AI features fail for a boring reason: they live somewhere nobody
goes.
You ship an AI panel. It sits in a tab. The tab stays closed. The
feature quietly dies while the roadmap says it launched.
So I designed this one to have no home screen at all. It is a design from attio
It answers in Slack, where the deal conversation is already happening.
It writes to the CRM, where the record already lives. It runs in the
terminal, where the technical team already works.
Three surfaces. No new place to check. No new habit to build.
The design question wasn't "what should the AI look like." It was
"where does the work already happen, and can we meet it there instead
of asking people to move?"
That reframe kills a lot of beautiful dashboards. It should.
I'm a product designer working across marketing surfaces and complex

For some devs, IT work almost stopped.
That made me think:
What would happen if AI tools stopped working for a full day?
Iām seeing more developers, especially those who started coding with AI, using AI for almost everything.
The problem is not using AI.
The problem is not knowing what to do without it.
Developers who started before AI became mainstream had to learn the fundamentals, read documentation, debug problems, search for solutions, and figure things out themselves.
That experience builds real problem-solving skills.
AI is a powerful tool, and developers should absolutely use it.
But there is a big difference between:
š Using AI to become faster
and
š Depending on AI to do your job
A good developer should be able to work without AI when necessary and use AI to improve productivity when itās available.
AI should be your copilot, not your brain.
