Most workout apps are built to motivate. They reward volume and treat a rest week as a step backwards. For experienced athletes that is misleading, because a week of reduced volume can be exactly what good periodization looks like.
My master’s research explored what a gym app could look like if it moved from persuasive to reflective. That became Notch, a gym tracker with no readiness score and no prescription. It asks for a one-tap check-in before a session and a short log of effort, recovery, and pain after it. Over time, it surfaces patterns, flagged but never scored, and the decision stays with the athlete.
I took it from flows and wireframes to designed screens and built it as a working app in Base44.
