Subtitles are structure, not decoration.
Most editors break subtitle lines by rhythm or character count. We break them by meaning. Each line has to be a unit of sense that survives on its own.
When a line break lands mid-thought, the viewer rereads. Rereading costs half a second. Half a second is the difference between a finished video and a swipe.
We learned this cutting founder reels at volume. Retention moved when the words did, not the effects.
