This piece is a side visual from the same project TOTEM.
A ceremonial board (Malu) made by the Sawos people of the Middle Sepik River, New Guinea, 19th century — carved in openwork, its pattern cut through like a lattice. In TOTEM, it becomes the emblem of male authority in the post-collapse world — a direct echo of its original role. Its motifs, reimagined and transformed, repeat not only in the radiating backrest of the throne itself, but in the standing elements beside it — reinforcing that authority. The original board was carved by the Sawos and traded to their neighbors, the Iatmul, who used boards like this in the initiation ceremonies that mark a boy's passage into manhood — the same charge of male power that TOTEM reforges into a throne for the world after collapse.

I selected this work because of my ongoing textile design practice for fashion brands. Morris’s approach to transforming natural forms into structured, repeatable patterns directly informs my own process of developing surface designs that balance organic inspiration with the technical demands of fabric production.
Source Work
William Morris, Strawberry Thief textile, design registered 1883, printed 1917–23, Merton Abbey Tapestry Works. Held in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Morris’s work is fundamentally concerned with systematising nature into repeatable, decorative form. His patterns distil botanical observation into structured motifs that can be tiled infinitely while retaining a sense of organic life.
Conceptual Approach
My approach is to deconstruct and analyse the image in order to extract the underlying visual logic of the design. By identifying and codifying the rules that govern Morris’s pattern, it becomes possible to generate new work that remains faithful to the spirit and structure of the original, while allowing for variation and reinterpretation. In effect, the pattern is treated as a rule-based system that can be re-applied to create related but distinct compositions.
Prompt
After deconstructing the pattern into its botanical components and analysing the work, create a prompt that:
Lists 5–7 visual rules that define this system (for example: “organic curves,” “dense overlapping,” “naturalistic but stylised forms”).
Describes the overall composition: layout, density, rhythm, and symmetry of the pattern.
Identifies the main motifs (strawberries, leaves, birds, stems, background fields).
Explains how these motifs repeat and interlock to form a seamless textile pattern.
The output should be a concise design brief (6–10 bullet points) that could guide the creation of a new pattern derived from this work.
