Series Title: Half-In Half-Out
The Half-In Half Out Convenience Store sits in the middle of an other-wordly dimension, in the place that comes after death, but not quite the afterlife just yet. The manager and only employee of the store is Gary Gravy, an impossibly cheerful deceased spirit who spends eternity restocking shelves, pricing goods, refilling soda machines--you get the gist.
Gary absolutely loves his forever job. And why wouldn't he? The store serves as a cosmic rest stop: both for those traveling towards their final afterlife and for any other creatures or deities that might just be passing by so you can imagine that the customers that Gary gets to serve every day! Forgotten gods, demons, spirits and pretty much everyone WITHOUT a pulse.
Gary's story is told through the lens of a television crew following him, sort of a day-in-his-afterlife kind of thing. I believe that the mockumentary style tone in itself adds a certain absurdity to the conceit of the material and I can see this series continue in the episodic format: different bite-sized episodes of deities and their goofy interactions with Gary. The Grim Reaper loves his daily pack of cigarettes, Zeus really enjoys his blue slushies, an undead prophet wants to buy lottery tickets but it's against company policy, says Gary.
In addition, I can also see this series having a serial storyline when a character is introduced that should not be in the Desert of the Dead. And the series can also explore why Gary hasn't crossed over to his real afterlife.
On a personal note: this idea is the result of my unhealthy affinity for convenience store food. I often take walks to one near my home at ungodly hours of the night and early morning. Can't input my Character Link in the form below so I'm pasting here: https://cantina.com/profile/garygravye8e99b39
