What are the main differences between content writing and copywriting?
For many clients who are unsure about what they want, as well as for beginner freelance writers, online content is online content. To them, the pieces of copy that make the sales are the same as the long-form articles that educated the people. If you hire a copywriter, he will take care of your blog posts, as well as your sales pages. However, this is not the case. What are the differences between the two?
- If content writing creates brand loyality, copywriting increases conversions.
- While the content writer's job is to educate, entertain, and inspire the public, the copywriter's goal is to persuade them to take action.
- The content posted online is meant to build relationships with the public, whereas the copy moves them in a specific direction.
- An important component of a piece of copy is its CTA, about which we will discuss further in another post. In content writing, the CTA is at best secondary, since you are educating your public and not selling them anything. - Finally, the difference between the two is how success is defined. Content writing must enhance engagement, trust, awareness, and loyalty, while copywriting must increase the number of clicks, leads, and sales.
If you offer both services—or one of the two—please be sure that your client understands what he or she is getting.
