You Need to Learn How to Sell Meaning
Nobody teaches designers this - and it might be one of the most important skills in the job.
We spend years mastering typography, layout, systems. Then we have to say a price out loud, and none of that training helps. That's a different skill: explaining why the work is worth what it costs.
Clients don't buy screens - they buy outcomes. If you can only talk about hours, your price has nothing to stand on. If you can talk about the outcome, it makes sense on its own.
This skill shows up in three places: → The offer - telling the story of the problem, not just listing deliverables → Defending your price - "why so much?" is a request to translate the number into value, not an attack → Holding scope - when a client tries to sneak new work into an old, already-priced task, it's on you to say: that's a new task, let's scope it separately
A few resources if you want to dig in:
* Pricing Design - Dan Mall * Pricing Creativity + Win Without Pitching - Blair Enns * Pricing Freelance Projects - Tom Hirst * Creative Strategy and the Business of Design - Douglas Davis
