MongoDB vs PostgreSQL: Which one would you choose in 2026? 🤔 A few years ago, I’d probably have said: “MongoDB = flexible, PostgreSQL = relational.”
But after working with both, I realized it’s not that simple. PostgreSQL can now handle JSONB, vector search, time-series data, geospatial queries, and horizontal scaling.
MongoDB has ACID transactions, joins, schema validation, vector search, and multi-region writes.
So… which one wins? 👀
My current rule is surprisingly simple: 🟦 PostgreSQL → most web apps, payments, users, orders, permissions, AI + vector search. 🟩 MongoDB → genuinely variable documents, massive event/IoT workloads, rapid schema iteration, or serious horizontal write scaling.
And honestly, for most new projects in 2026, I’d start with PostgreSQL. Not because MongoDB is bad. Because PostgreSQL gives you an incredible amount of flexibility without leaving the relational world.
I broke down the performance, cost, scaling, AI, and real-world tradeoffs here 👇 🔗 https://blog.webdevlab.org/mongodb-vs-postgresql-2026
