A few days ago, I designed a professional carousel flyer entirely in Canva.
Like many people, I've heard comments such as: "Canva isn't for serious designers." "You need expensive software to create premium designs."
After completing this project, I believe the tool isn't the limiting factor, our creativity is.
Every page of this carousel was designed in Canva, from the layout and typography to the visual hierarchy and overall presentation. What mattered most wasn't the software; it was understanding design principles, paying attention to detail, and spending time refining every element until it communicated the message clearly.
Canva has evolved far beyond being a "beginner's design tool." With features like grids, smart guides, layers, masking, animations, AI-powered tools, brand kits, and thousands of design assets, it's capable of producing work that looks polished and professional when used intentionally.
The difference isn't whether you use Canva, Photoshop, Figma, or Illustrator. The difference is:
How well you understand design fundamentals.
How effectively you communicate visually.
How patient you are in refining your work.
How creative you are in solving design problems.
I've seen incredible designs created with Canva, and I've also seen poor designs created with expensive software. The software doesn't make the designer, the designer makes the software valuable.
This project reminded me that creativity will always outweigh the tool. If you're just starting your design journey, don't wait until you have the "perfect" software. Start with what you have. Learn the principles. Practice consistently. Improve with every project.
Your creativity is your greatest design tool.
I'd love to hear your thoughts: What's the best design you've created using Canva or another tool that people often underestimate?
