I used to think using AI in my design workflow was "cheating."
During my final project at The Roothub Academy, I hit a massive roadblock: a brutal, tight deadline. Staring at a blank canvas with time running out, I decided to use a Figma AI UI generator to quickly wireframe and build out initial screens. Honestly? I felt an immediate wave of designer guilt. It felt like a shortcut. It felt like cheating. But as I took those AI-generated screens and began meticulously redesigning, refining, and tailoring them to solve the actual user problems of my project, my perspective completely shifted. I realized my guilt wasn't from doing bad work, it was just the friction of adapting to a massive industry shift.
Here is the reality of the current UI/UX design market:
AI solves the "cold start" problem. It skips the boilerplate layout phase so you can jump straight into high-value design thinking.
Clients value outcomes, not pixel-pushing. Stakeholders care about strategic problem-solving and meeting deadlines, not whether you hand-crafted every standard card input from scratch.
Efficiency is a competitive edge. Embracing these tools is exactly how you deliver high-quality work at the speed the industry now demands. Using AI didn’t replace my job; it eased my workflow and allowed me to cross the finish line on time.
As UI/UX designers, leveraging AI isn't cutting corners, it’s smart engineering. Don’t feel guilty for optimizing your workflow and delivering efficiently. Work smarter, not harder. To my fellow designers: How are you incorporating AI into your Figma workflow lately? Let's discuss below! 👇
