I used to think good designers were born with TASTE. ⠀ They were not. ⠀ They trained it. ⠀ For a long time, I thought getting better meant mastering more tools. ⠀ Figma. Webflow. Framer. Adobe. ⠀ Now AI can generate the layout for you in seconds. ⠀ Which means knowing how the tool works is no longer your advantage. ⠀ Your eye is. For the last few months, my job has been reviewing AI-generated designs, all day, every day. And making hundreds of design decisions has taught me this: Taste does not come from collecting hundreds of screenshots on ✕ Dribbble. ✕ Behance. ✕ Pinterest. ✕ Award-winning websites. It doesn't automatically make you better at judging them. The real skill is seeing the difference. I started practicing it more intentionally: Look at great design. Don't just admire it. Ask what makes it work. Look at bad design. Find the exact decision that makes it feel wrong. Compare two similar designs. Ask why one feels more trustworthy, clearer, or easier to use. Question your own decisions. Instead of asking, "Does this look good?" ask, "Does this need to be here?" Explain your judgment. If you can't explain why something works, you probably don't understand it yet. That's how Design Taste gets stronger. ✕ Not by memorizing trends. ✕ Not by copying what looks expensive. ✕ Not by learning another Figma trick. By making more decisions... and becoming better at knowing which decisions are worth making. To build taste, you have to stop saving designs and start questioning the decisions behind them: When you look at enough screens through that lens, something shifts. ⠀ You stop looking at design as decoration. ⠀ You start seeing why a user trusts one product and abandons another. ⠀ AI will give you infinite variations. ⠀ Only your TRAINED EYE knows which one actually deserves to ship.
