Made this chess set a while back as part of a 3D modeling course.

I uploaded it to Sketchfab and that was pretty much where it stayed.

Recently I came back to it and thought it would be fun to actually do something with it on the web, so I brought the same old model into my portfolio and started building around it.

Camera moves, interacting with the pieces, a few chess sequences... it ended up becoming a lot more than the model I originally made.

Kinda nice seeing an old project get a second life.

Thanks! You actually made me reopen the old Blender file 😄 The pieces are pretty simple, just black and white materials with slightly different roughness. The board has procedural textures on the squares and a rosewood texture for the wood. I made this in 2019, so I had completely forgotten how I set it up.

A while ago, I built this feature section for TipMi. Looking at the varied card sizes, you might think it requires complex positioning or endless Flexbox containers. The secret weapon? CSS Grid with grid-template-areas.

Using Grid for this specific architecture is the easiest, most scalable approach. You get complete two-dimensional control, allowing you to span items across multiple columns and rows seamlessly while keeping the underlying HTML structure incredibly clean and readable.
