AI Isn’t Human
We often assume that because AI models have a strong command of language, they must be intelligent or at least on the path to real understanding. But at the same time, we also believe that language alone cannot be the foundation for true thought. This contradiction comes from the fact that we continue to measure AI by comparing it to ourselves. We believe that meaning and thinking must be rooted in something more than patterns of words, yet we forget that even in humans, the process of forming, sharing, and interpreting thoughts is deeply unclear. We still don’t fully understand how one person successfully communicates a complex idea to another, or how language triggers understanding in our minds.
This flawed perspective leads us to dismiss the capabilities of language models simply because they don’t work like we do. We keep asking whether AI “really understands” or “really thinks,” as if those questions even have clear answers for humans. The truth might be that these models don’t think at all, not in the human sense, and that’s exactly the point. They generate responses based on probabilities, not reasoning. But just because their inner workings are alien to us doesn’t mean they aren’t functioning meaningfully. The problem isn’t what AI is doing; it’s how we keep projecting ourselves onto it, trying to fit it into a framework it was never designed for. And unless we let go of that need to make it human, we might continue misunderstanding what it truly is.
