The longer a conversation runs, the more it holds that nobody chose to keep.
Instructions you restated twice because you forgot you’d already given them. A draft from an hour ago that’s been replaced. A big reference document pasted in “just in case” that never came up again.
A quick test before you keep going in a long session: for each chunk of context, ask whether the next answer depends on it. If it doesn’t, it’s just taking up room.
Two things make this easier. Keep stable information (your role, your standards, how you want output formatted) in one place you reuse, instead of retyping it. And when a piece of work is finished, replace the whole back-and-forth with a one-line summary of what was decided.
Starting a fresh session feels like losing progress. If the summary is good, you’re not losing anything, just the clutter.
