Good Ads Create Want. Desire Is the Psychological Byproduct.
Most D2C brands think the goal of Ad Copy is to create immediate desire.
But desire does not happen first.
It starts with Want.
Want is instant.
It is the first emotional reaction inside the Sales Funnel — the moment the buyer thinks:
👉 I want this
👉 This feels good
👉 I can see myself with this
👉 This could be for me
That happens fast.
Sometimes in seconds.
Sometimes in the first half-scroll of a Meta Ad.
But Want alone does not scale ROAS.
Because Want is easy.
Almost everyone feels Want.
The real game starts after that.
Then comes the friction:
— Doubts
— Questions
— Hesitation
— Buyer Resistance
The buyer starts asking:
👉 Do I actually need this?
👉 Is this worth the investment?
👉 Will this really work for me?
👉 What if this becomes another regret purchase?
👉 Am I making the right decision?
This is where most brands lose the sale—and where Cart Abandonment begins.
Because Want is emotional.
But Strategic Desire is earned.
Desire is what happens when Want survives doubt.
When the buyer verifies it.
When it feels justified.
When it becomes:
👉 I should have this
👉 This belongs in my life
👉 This solves something real
👉 I’ll regret not getting this
That is Desire.
And Desire drives Conversion Rates.
Not because the buyer simply wants it—
but because now they believe it is right.
High-performing Creative Strategy is not built to create instant desire.
It is built to guide Want through doubt until it becomes Desire.
That is the real Marketing Psychology of conversion.
Because buyers do not purchase at Want.
They purchase at Certainty.

It's an uncomfortable read if you sell brand strategy.
Sharp's data argues that distinctiveness (color, type, mascot, sonic mark) does more work than differentiation (a sharp strategic position). For Coca-Cola, Heinz, Mars, the numbers back him up. Big brands grow by being mentally and physically available, not by being meaningfully different.
Then I close the book and open Figma for a Series A client launching into a category most buyers have never heard of.
Sharp's frame doesn't apply yet. Distinctive assets only compound when buyers already know they want the category. When the market is being created, a sharp point of view does most of the work. The asset system can come later.
So the honest position, sitting with this for a few months, is that differentiation is usually a phase, not a permanent moat. It's the weapon you need in years 1 to 3, when buyers don't know the category and the competition is undefined. Sharp's playbook kicks in around year 5, when the category is real and you're fighting for share of mind.
Selling "be distinctive" to a Series A founder is malpractice. Selling "differentiate harder" to Heinz is also malpractice.
Most B2B clients aren't actually buying a 100 year brand position. They're buying a weapon for the next 18 months of attention.
Love this frame 🔥. Most people focus on the visual asset system (the distinctiveness), but as an AEO/SEO specialist, I’m usually the one tasked with making that 'sharp point of view' discoverable.
Sitting with this, though, it feels like differentiation is the high-signal period...

Definitely ChatGPT. There is a clear connection between emphasising the right words (to attract buyers) and using visuals to pull them in. I can see the product clearly, and I can see what their offer is, making my decision starts off at this point
