What happens when you upload an image into AI and ask it to turn it into a video? The system does not “animate” the picture or understand the scene. It converts the image into a latent representation and, trained on large video datasets, predicts how images change over time. The output is a sequence of frames that are probable continuations of the original image, generated using a diffusion process (from noise to image). The model is not reconstructing reality. It samples from a probability distribution of videos. This is why results often appear repetitive or inconsistent: the system follows statistical likelihood, not physical laws.
In this example, I uploaded a surreal Magritte painting into Grok. Despite its unreal composition, the model applies probable motion, translating it into familiar movement patterns.
