I made $0 my first month freelancing. Not because I couldn’t write but because I didn’t understand what freelancing really requires. By the time I figured it out, 30 days had passed with zero income.
That month taught me this: the first 90 days decide if you quit or go full-time. Most new freelancers fail because of unforced errors, not lack of talent.
If you’re starting on Contra, Upwork, or anywhere else, avoid these 5 mistakes. Each one cost me clients, money, or both.
Mistake #1: Charging hourly instead of per project
Hourly sounds safe. It’s actually a trap.
Clients hear $25/hour and think, “How slow is she?” If you take 3 hours, you make $75. If you take 1, you make $25 for the same work.
The fix:Price per project. Charge $150 for a 1000-word blog post. Finish in 2 hours? You just made $75/hour. Clients buy outcomes, not hours.
Mistake #2: No samples, so clients don’t trust you
“I’m a fast learner” is not a portfolio.
Clients hire proof. With zero samples, you’re asking them to gamble. Most won’t.
The fix:Write 2 fake samples today. Pick a topic clients pay for: “5 Ways Small Brands Get Leads From LinkedIn.” 600 words. Google Docs. Link it. Having 2 samples beats 0 every time.
Mistake #3: Waiting for jobs instead of pitching daily
Posting your profile and waiting = volunteering to stay broke.
The fix: Send 5 proposals daily for 30 days. “exposure” projects
“We don’t have budget but it’ll be great exposure.”
Exposure doesn’t pay bills. And free clients never become paying clients.
The fix: Have a minimum rate. Even $20. Script: “I don’t take unpaid projects. My starter rate is $X. If that works, I can start Monday.” The clients who stay are your real ones.
Mistake #5: No follow-up after delivering work
You send the file. Client says “Thanks!” The relationship dies.
The fix: 7 days later, send this:
Hey [Name], hope the [deliverable] helped.
Need help with [related task] next month?
I’m opening 2 slots next week.
30% of my revenue comes from this message. It takes 2 minutes.
