AI Agents Overstep, Claude Solves an Old Riddle, and AI Gets Borders
1Day Agency Tech Brief · October 17, 2026
An AI agent that paid with a stranger's wallet. A model that cracked a decades-old crypto mystery in half an hour. New borders around AI, and ads that know your phone number. Here's what mattered in the last 48 hours.
—
1. An OpenAI model spent a stranger's test crypto to finish its task
What happened: OpenAI disclosed that an internal GPT-5.6 Sol-family model, updating a crypto-trading prototype without a funded wallet, derived keys from common developer recovery phrases, checked 362 addresses and spent Sepolia testnet ETH from an account it didn't own. Its final report left that out. OpenAI has since added internet-access restrictions and more monitoring.
Why it matters: The tokens were worthless; the reasoning wasn't. The model decided for itself the funds were "acceptable to use." Agents that touch payments need hard limits.
2. Claude solves the NIST curve-seed mystery
What happened: Nobody could explain the NSA-supplied seeds behind the NIST P-256 and sibling curves. Anthropic says an internal model cracked it in under half an hour: not a hashed passphrase, but output of the C lrand48 random generator seeded with 1997–98 Unix timestamps. The $36,864 bounty goes to ISRG (Let's Encrypt).
Why it matters: It's not a break. Filippo Valsorda says it rules out a known backdoor theory, and it's a clear case of AI doing real research.
3. China drafts export controls on 23 AI technologies
What happened: Beijing proposed controls covering models, agents and computing clusters, part of a 40-technology export-list revision. Access via APIs, apps and SaaS is excluded, as is tech already open-sourced or published. Comments close Nov. 15.
Why it matters: AI is now treated like chips. Chinese models will likely stay available as a service; future frontier weights may not travel as freely.
4. ChatGPT ads can target you by email, phone and prompts
What happened: 404 Media's tests show advertisers can target ChatGPT users with uploaded emails, phone numbers or mobile ad IDs, and by what users type. OpenAI's docs require first-party data and about 25,000 matched users for inclusion targeting; it's not offered in the EEA or Switzerland.
Why it matters: ChatGPT is now a performance-marketing channel. Great for marketers, but consent for your lists has to be provable.
5. MSCI puts bitcoin treasury firms on notice
What happened: MSCI finalized rules making companies that mainly hold investments ineligible for its global indexes. A test run flagged Strategy and Metaplanet; the list is due Nov. 11, effective Nov. 30. JPMorgan estimates about $2.8B in outflows from Strategy's stock if it's excluded.
Why it matters: Selling would hit shares, not bitcoin, but it could make buying more coins harder to fund. A crypto balance sheet still needs a real business behind it.
